Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying such drugs must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
